| 1 Hele jorden havde samme sprog og samme tungemål. | 1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. |
| 2 Da de brød op mod øst, stødte de på en-dal i landet Sinear, hvor de slog sig ned. | 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. |
| 3 De sagde til hinanden: "Kom, lad os stryge teglsten og brænde dem hårde!" De brugte tegl som stenogasfalt som mørtel. | 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. |
| 4 Så sagde de: "Lad os bygge en by med et tårn, som når op til himlen, og skabe os et navn, for at vi ikke skal blive spredt ud over hele jorden." | 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. |
| 5 Herren steg ned for at se byen og tårnet, som menneskene byggede. | 5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. |
| 6 Så sagde Herren: "Se, de er et folk med samme sprog. Når de begynder at handle sådan, vil intet af det, de planlægger, være umuligt for dem. | 6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. |
| 7 Lad os stige derned og forvirre deres sprog, så de ikke forstår hinanden." | 7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. |
| 8 Så spredte Herren dem derfra ud over hele jorden, så de matte holde op med at bygge byen. | 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. |
| 9 Derfor hedder den Babel, for der forvirrede Herren sproget på hele jorden, og derfra spredte Herren menneskene ud over hele jorden. | 9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. |
| 10 Dette er Sems slægt. Sem var 100 år, da han fik Arpakshad to år efter vandfloden. | 10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood: |
| 11 Efter at Sem havde fået Arpakshad, levede han i 500 år og fik sønner og døtre. | 11 And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. |
| 12 Da Arpakshad havde levet 35 år, fik han Shela. | 12 And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah: |
| 13 Efter at Arpakshad havde fået Shela, levede han i 403 år og fik sønner og døtre. | 13 And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters. |
| 14 Da Shela havde levet 30 år, fik han Eber. | 14 And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber: |
| 15 Efter at Shela havde fået Eber, levede han i 403 år og fik sønner og døtre. | 15 And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters. |
| 16 Da Eber havde levet 34 år, fik han Peleg. | 16 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg: |
| 17 Efter at Eber havde fået Peleg, levede han i 430 år og fik sønner og døtre. | 17 And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters. |
| 18 Da Peleg havde levet 30 år, fik han Re'u. | 18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu: |
| 19 Efter at Peleg havde fået Re'u, leve de han i 209 år og fik sønner og døtre. | 19 And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters. |
| 20 Da Re'u havde levet 32 år, fik han Serug. | 20 And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug: |
| 21 Efter at Re'u havde fået Serug, levede han i 207 år og fik sønner og døtre. | 21 And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters. |
| 22 Da Serug havde levet 30 år, fik han Nakor. | 22 And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor: |
| 23 Efter at Serug havde fået Nakor, levede han i 200 år og fik sønner og døtre. | 23 And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. |
| 24 Da Nakor havde levet 29 år, fik han Tera. | 24 And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah: |
| 25 Efter at Nakor havde fået Tera, levede han i 119 år og fik sønner og døtre. | 25 And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters. |
| 26 Da Tera havde levet 70 år, fik han Abram, Nakor og Haran. | 26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran. |
| 27 Dette er Teras slægt. Tera fik Abram, Nakor og Haran. Haran fik Lot. | 27 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. |
| 28 Haran døde før sin far Tera i sit fædreland, i Ur i Kaldæa. | 28 And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. |
| 29 Abram og Nakor giftede sig. Abrams kone hed Saraj, Nakors kone hed Milka og var datter af Haran, Milkas og Jiskas far. | 29 And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. |
| 30 Saraj var ufrugtbar og fik ingen børn. | 30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child. |
| 31 Så tog Tera sin søn Abram, sin sønnesøn Lot, der var søn af Haran, og sin svigerdatter Saraj, sin søn Abrams kone, og sammen forlod de Ur i Kaldæa for at drage til Kana'ans land. De kom til Karan, hvor de slog sig ned. | 31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. |
| 32 Tera levede 205 år. Så døde Tera i Karan. | 32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran. |
