| 1 Når Herren din Gud udrydder de folk, hvis land Herren din Gud vil give dig, og du fordriver dem og bosætter dig i deres byer og huse, | 1 Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it. |
| 2 skal du give tre byer en særstilling i det land, Herren din Gud vil give dig i eje. | 2 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither. |
| 3 Du skal afstikke vejen til dem og dele det landområde, som Herren din Gud giver dig i eje, i tre dele. Enhver drabsmand skal kunne søge tilflugt dér. | 3 And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past; |
| 4 Om drabsmanden, der skal kunne bevare livet ved at søge tilflugt der, gælder følgende: Den drabsmand, der har slået sin næste ihjel, uforvarende og uden tidligere at have næret fjendskab mod ham | 4 As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the ax to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live: |
| 5 - han er måske gået med den anden ind i skoven for at fælde træer, og netop som han svinger øksen for at fælde træet, ryger øksehovedet af skaftet og rammer hans kammerat, så han dør ? han kan søge tilflugt i en af disse byer og bevare livet. | 5 Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past. |
| 6 Blodhævneren må ikke i sin ophidselse kunne forfølge drabsmanden og indhente ham, fordi vejen er lang, og slå ham ihjel; han er jo ikke skyldig til døden, eftersom han ikke tidligere havde næret fjendskab mod ham. | 6 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee. |
| 7 Derfor befaler jeg dig at give tre byer en særstilling. | 7 And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers; |
| 8 Og hvis Herren din Gud udvider dit landområde, sådan som han tilsvor dine fædre, og giver dig hele det land, som han lovede at give dine fædre, | 8 If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three: |
| 9 fordi du omhyggeligt gør alt det, jeg i dag befaler dig, og elsker Herren din Gud og altid vandrer ad hans veje, så skal du føje yderligere tre byer til disse tre. | 9 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee. |
| 10 Så bliver der ikke udgydt uskyldigt blod i det land, Herren din Gud vil give dig i eje; ellers kommer der til at hvile blodskyld på dig. | 10 But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities: |
| 11 Men er der tale om en mand, der nærer fjendskab mod sin næste og lurer på ham, overfalder ham og slår ham ihjel og søger tilflugt i en af disse byer, | 11 Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. |
| 12 da skal de ældste fra hans by sende bud og hente ham hjem og overgive ham i blodhævnerens hånd; han skal dø! | 12 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee. |
| 13 Vis ham ingen barmhjertighed, men rens Israel for uskyldigt udgydt blod, så vil det gå dig godt. | 13 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it. |
| 14 I den arvelod, du får i det land, Herren din Gud vil give dig i eje, må du ikke flytte skellet til din nabos mark; det har tidligere slægtled sat. | 14 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established. |
| 15 Det er ikke nok, at en enkelt optræder som vidne imod nogen, når det drejer sig om forbrydelser og overtrædelser, forsyndelser af enhver art. På to eller tre vidners udsagn skal en sag afgøres. | 15 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; |
| 16 Når én optræder som falsk vidne mod nogen og anklager ham for en lovovertrædelse, | 16 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; |
| 17 og de to mænd, der har en retssag, træder frem forHerrens ansigt, for de præster og dommere, som er der til den tid, | 17 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; |
| 18 og dommerne får sagen grundigt undersøgt, og det så viser sig, at vidnet lyver og har rettet falsk anklage mod sin landsmand, | 18 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you. |
| 19 da skal I gøre mod ham, som han havde planlagt at gøre mod sin landsmand. Du skal udrydde det onde af din midte. | 19 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you. |
| 20 Andre skal høre det og blive bange, og man skal ikke mere begå så ond en handling hos dig. | 20 And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. |
| 21 Vis ingen barmhjertighed! Liv for liv, øje for øje, tand for tand, hånd for hånd, fod for fod! | 21 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. |
