| 1 Dette er befalingerne, lovene og retsreglerne, som Herren jeres Gud har pålagt mig at lære jer; dem skal I følge i det land, I skal over og erobre, | 1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: |
| 2 for at du skal frygte Herren din Gud og holde alle hans love og befalinger, som jeg i dag giver dig, du og din søn og din sønnesøn, så længe du lever, så at du må få et langt liv. | 2 That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. |
| 3 Så hør dem da, Israel, og følg dem omhyggeligt for at det må gå dig godt, og I må blive meget talrige, sådan som Herren, dine fædres Gud, har lovet dig, i et land, der flyder med mælk og honning. | 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey. |
| 4 Hør, Israel! Herren vor Gud, Herren er én. | 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: |
| 5 Derfor skal du elske Herren din Gud af hele dit hjerte og af hele din sjæl og af hele din styrke. | 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. |
| 6 Disse ord, som jeg i dag befaler dig, skal ligge dig på sinde, | 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: |
| 7 og du skal gentage dem for dine sønner; du skal fremsige dem, både når du er hjemme, og når du er ude, når du går i seng, og når du står op. | 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. |
| 8 Du skal binde dem om din hånd som et tegn, de skal sidde på pande som et mærke, | 8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. |
| 9 og du skal skrive dem på dørstolperne i dit hjem og i dine porte. | 9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. |
| 10 Herren Gud vil føre dig ind i det land, som han lovede dine fædre Abraham, Isak og Jakob at give dig, et land med store og smukke byer, du ikke selv har bygget, | 10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, |
| 11 med huse, der er fulde af alt godt, du ikke selv har samlet, med udhuggede cisterner, du ikke selv har hugget ud, med vingårde og olivenlunde, du ikke selv har plantet. Når du så har spist dig mæt, | 11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; |
| 12 skal du tage dig i agt, at du ikke glemmer Herren, som førte dig ud af Egypten, af trællehuset. | 12 Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. |
| 13 Du skal frygte Herren Gud, ham skal du tjene, og ved hans navn skal du sværge. | 13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. |
| 14 I må ikke følge andre guder, af den slags folkene rundt om jer dyrker, | 14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; |
| 15 for Herren din Gud, som bor hos dig, er en lidenskabelig Gud. Pas på, at Herren Guds vrede ikke flammer op imod dig, så han udrydder dig fra jordens overflade. | 15 (For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth. |
| 16 I må ikke udæske Herren jeres Gud, sådan som I gjorde ved Massa. | 16 Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. |
| 17 I skal holde Herren jeres Guds befalinger og de formaninger og love, han har givet dig. | 17 Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. |
| 18 Gør, hvad der er ret og godt i Herrens øjne, for at det må gå dig godt, og du må komme ind og tage det herlige land i besiddelse, som Herren har lovet dine fædre. | 18 And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, |
| 19 Herren vil jage alle dine fjender væk foran dig, sådan som han har lovet. | 19 To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken. |
| 20 Når søn i fremtiden spørger dig: "Hvilke formaninger, love og retsregler er det, Herren vor Gud har givet jer?" | 20 And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you? |
| 21 skal du svare ham: "Vi var Faraos trælle i Egypten, men Herren førte os ud af Egypten med stærk hånd. | 21 Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand: |
| 22 Og Herren gjorde store og ulykkebringende tegn og undere i Egypten mod Farao og hele hans hus for øjnene af os. | 22 And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes: |
| 23 Men os førte han ud derfra for at føre os ind og give os det land, han havde lovet vore fædre. | 23 And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers. |
| 24 Og Herren befalede os at følge alle disse love og at frygte Herren vor Gud til vort eget bedste alle dage, så han kunne holde os i live, som han har gjort indtil i dag. | 24 And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. |
| 25 Vores retfærdighed består deri, at vi for Herren vor Guds ansigt | 25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us. |
