1 Tiberius havde været kejser i Rom i fjorten år, Pontius Pilatus var guvernør i Judæa. 2 Annas og Kaifas var ypperstepræster. I skal være tilfredse med den løn I får. «	14 Også nogle soldater spurgte: »Hvad skal så vi gøre.« Og til dem sagde han: »Ikke mishandle eller udplyndre nogen, men lade jer nøje med jeres løn.«	14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
15 Mange mennesker levede i forventningen om at Messias snart ville komme, og derfor spurgte de sig selv om det måske var Johannes.	15 Folket var fyldt med forventning, og alle tænkte i deres stille sind, om Johannes mon skulle være Kristus.	15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

18 Johannes opfordrede på alle mulige måder folk til at omvende sig og talte også om Gud.	18 Også på mange andre måder formanede han, mens han forkyndte evangeliet for folket.	18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
19 En dag kritiserede han Galilæas regent, Herodes Antipas, for at have giftet sig med sin brors tidligere kone, Herodias, og for alle de andre onde ting han havde gjort.	19 Men da landsfyrsten Herodes blev irettesat af ham for sit forhold til sin brors hustru, Herodias, og for alt det onde, han havde gjort,	19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
20 Derfor sørgede Herodes for at Johannes blev smidt i fængsel. Og på den måde føjede han endnu en forbrydelse til sit lange synderegister.	20 så føjede Herodes til alt det andet også det, at han lod Johannes kaste i fængsel.	20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
